  • My Redneck Roots Are Paying Off

I am trying something new this year, if you remember.

    cinder blocks

    +

    stock watering tanks

    =

a garden even a scrawny, weak-kneed Wild Woman can maintain.

I will admit, it looks a bit redneck,
but it seems to be working for me and the plants.

I’ve pulled two, count them, only two tiny weeds from these container beds this season.  All of my raised beds have been taken over because my mangy mutt self just isn’t able to keep up with it when I am out of remission.  Which seems to have taken up permanent residence.  We will save that glorious (not so glorious) story for another time.

I’m going to focus on the lovely things in my life today.

Can you taste the salsa already?

How do you like your salsa, hot, mild, sweet, lots of cilantro?

If you run your mouse over the photos, you will see the captions.

If you click here, you can see the containers at planting time.

  • This, we all should do, Tamy:  Focus on the good things in our lives, today.  BTW:  Hot salsa.

  • I don’t think it looks redneck at all. I think it looks very pretty, a nice break to the fencing. And for the record, I like my salsa mild, with just the right amount of cilantro, so that you can still taste everything else. Have a good one!

  • nice job getting that garden to come to you!! now I’m jealous!!  my raised garden has gone to the cats and it ain’t nice, no, not nice at all…. sigh****

  • They look BEAUTIFUL! This is exactly what I have in mind for when I start my veggie garden. EXACTLY. Only mine will be in rows all over my backyard. It’s nice to know that it actually works well, and cuts down on weeding! I can’t wait until I get to start mine someday!

  • I like my salsa freshly made, medium heat, with lots of cilantro.  I have actually had thoughts of using stock tanks as containers for gardening, or old tubs.  I think your setup is very innovative, and beautifully presented.  Happy gardening;  you’ll  be enjoying the fruits (and veggies) of your labor in no time!!!

  • Dear Tamy,

Every time I visit your blog and see all the “wide open spaces” I realize I’m really quite cramped in an 800 ft. square mobile home on a lot where you can almost just reach out the window and into the next house to borrow a cup of sugar.Continually praying those pesky tornadoes stay away from you and yours.Michael F. • I was starting to worry about them rusting, but I suppose they wouldn’t rust any faster than being full of water all the time. And it does make wonderful shade for the dogs.

  • Looking good, Tamy! Who cares if it’s “redneck”… it works for you and you’re rocking it!

  • Mild.  Very, very mild.  You know what?  I think just tomatoes, cilantro, and a little onion will do me just fine.

I’m so stealing this idea for next year.  The ants have colonized in my pots on the ground.  Or I may just bulldoze the entire backyard.  I’m torn between the two.

  • I think that looks awesome! I wish our landlord would let us have a little garden. I haven;t done so much as pull up a weed since I was a teenager.

SALSA!!!! One of the first things to come to mind, looking at your pictures! With me, it depends on how I feel at that moment. Sometimes, mild, sometimes medium, and sometimes WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOt!

  • i like it.  it looks great!

  • I am incredibly jealous of your troughed up garden. I WANT that. I NEED that. I LOVE that.

  • I know that most planters have to have a few holes in the bottom for drainage. So you did make holes in the bottom or you are being careful not to over water the plants?

  • ooo love the containers, where did you get them?

  • Magnificent!

  • Jeff Foxworthy says that your garden rocks it’s redneck-ness!!!

    Your veggies are beautimously beautiful!!!!

I CAN taste the salsa already!!! I like mine med/mild with lots of cilantro!!!

A Mexican friend of mine gave me her salsa/bean recipe last year…so I made jars of it for Christmas and when my kids came home they wiped it all out!!!
Ha! They put it on the table for every meal!!!

    HUGS!!!

  • Yay! I love seeing those Atwoods troughs. Reminds me of shopping at Atwoods with my dad in Arkansas.

  • I’ve take those two little furry plants under the tank. lol

  • I like my salsa hot with lots of cilantro…the thing I like about your redneck garden is my dogs would not be able to hike a leg up that far…well I don’t think they could anyway…it really grosses me out for the dogs to pee on my plants

  • Babylon had hanging gardens. you are almost there. if you can bend some plants over the top of the planter so they hang down, I’ll bet you a jug of home made wine that the tomatoes in that planter are bigger than the others.  eh?

  • I envy your green thumb. I can almost taste your salsa. I like it medium-to-hot…I used to like killer hot, but my body can’t take it anymore. Cilantro is the bomb…the more the better.

  • I think these look lovely.

  • hehehe – I love the two little critters under the stock watering tank… and is that a dish of dog food sitting in the middle of it all? lol
I saw the boots you put up for the giveaway.  That is one fancy, nice pair of boots, turquoise and all.   I’m surprised you’re willing to part with them.

If you run your mouse over the photos, you will see the captions.”
Ok, miss fancy, even with her blog. lol

I’m also hoping to have tomatos soon.  Plants are looking pretty good this year.  I learn a little each season.
I won’t likely get the chance to share pictures this season though.  All my lovely Xangan’s will be gone.

  • @Texasjillcarmel - lol – first thing that caught my attention too,

  • @PPhilip - Yes, we drilled holes in the bottom for good drainage.  They seem to do even better than the plants in the ground this year.  I will be adding more containers next year and giving cucumbers and peas a go in them.

@VNlilMAN - We got them at Atwoods, a farm supply store.

  • i like the look of those watering tans.  and yes, i think those tomatoes and chilies would make great salsa.
